A Brief Guide to Birmingham

Birmingham Cathedral (St Philip)

While London is the UK’s well known capital Birmingham is the lesser known second largest city in the country. As the cultural center of the West Midlands Birmingham offers visitors and enormous range of entertainment and activities. Without doubt, Birmingham is a city not to be missed if you are taking a touring vacation in the UK.

Here are just a few of the must-see attractions that the city has to offer

Birmingham Cathedral: This is one of the city’ss most beautiful historic buildings. Built in 1725 the building boasts no less than four Pre-Raphaelite stained-glass windows.

The Royal Air Force Museum: The museum is home to a fantastic collection of aviation history. You’ll find over seventy aircraft housed in three wartime hangars. You can see some of the few remaining Spitfires, Vulcans and Hurricanes. Highly recommended!

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery: There are a huge range of exhibits including Egyptian mummiesa and a fantastic toy collection. Treat yourself to some culture and examine the largest collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings in the world.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens: Fifteen acres of beautiful gardens, great for exploring, along with four enormous glasshouses full of exotic plants.

And if you are touring with your family there is no shortage of places to visit for some fantastic days out. Here are a few suggestions:

Second City Canal Cruises: This is great fun. I can heartily recommend a canal boat cruise as I took one of these with my family last year and it was great fun.

The National Sea Life Centre: This national center is home to over sixty rare maritime species, not to be missed.

Newbrook Farm Experience: This is great for animal lovers. Many rare and ancient breeds can be seen here.

Woodgate Valley Country Park: This outstanding country park is ideal for those who enjoy walking in the outdoors. And there is an excellent farm with a play area and a fun pony-trekking centre, ideal for the children.

These are just a small selection of the places that Birmingham has to offer. I’ver personally visited all of these, and more, and all should be on your ‘must visit’ list when you go to Birmingham.
