Most of your time in airports is spent waiting. Short of applying for airport jobs whilst you await your flight, what else could you do to keep yourself from getting bored? Here are some suggestions.

Book stores

You could, at a push, spend an hour looking through book stores. You could flick through magazines, and if the shop attendant bothers you just buy one and go read that for a while.

Use the internet

Some airports have internet cafe’s that you could use or, alternatively you could use your own laptop to connect to the wireless, if you have one with you. It is quite easy to wile away a number of hours surfing the net. You might even be the kind that likes to actually be productive and get some work done.

Displays

Some airports have interesting displays or museums. This can range from museums displaying airport history and plane information to F1 cars on show in the food court. You could find by wandering around that airport that other things catch your eye and are worth an explore.

People watching

Sitting back and watching the world go by can be a good way of wiling away the hours. Airports are the perfect place to take in the different cultural trends on display. Do be careful when doing this not to be rude and stare. This is more enjoyable if you have a seat and a drink.

Write

Maybe you could use this time to write a postcard or simply note down whatever enters your head. Noting down the funny things you see could be a good read for friends when you get home. A good time waster is to make lists of things that you’d like to do either when you reach your destination, or when you return home.

Make a friend

Without coming across as a freak, you could try engaging someone waiting near you in a conversation. Be are aware though that this could really aggravate individuals and this should be your sign to leave them. However, you may well find that your offer of conversation is gratefully received.

For whatever reason, occasionally all of us will succumb to the temptation to take a last minute holiday. Although chooing to take a holiday on a whim is inevitably exciting, it can also be a costly option, particularly when it comes to booking last minute flights.

As with most things in life, however, carrying out diligent research and keeping all options open should help you find flights that won’t burn a hole in your back pocket. The information provided in the guide below offers some helpful advice on booking last minute flights.

Find Last Minute Flights: Useful Information

Booking last minute flights will often involve some level of compromise, particularly if you’re keen to secure a bargain break to sunnier climes. Inevitably, prices for airline tickets will soar as the departure date draws near, and because of this it’s wise to be flexible in terms of your destination and departure.

If you’re looking to squeeze the pennies, it is often sensible to consider flights that depart during the early hours of the morning or late evening, the so-called ‘red eye’ flights. Whilst these particular flights may not be particularly appealing in terms of travel to and from the airport, they will be priced far more kindly than flights leaving at peak times. True, it’s never easy to drag yourself up at 3am in the morning, but it’ll seem worthwhile once you are basking in the sunshine or hitting the slopes by early afternoon, allowing you to divert those extra funds you saved on the flights to your holiday kitty.

Use flight comparison sites to locate the best possible deal. Considering the sheer amount of budget airlines and an increase in flight routes, there has never been as much consumer choice as there is available today. Budget airlines will be fighting to keep their prices as competitive as possible, so never underestimate the importance of good research in securing a bargain.

Finally, once the flights are booked, it’ll be time to switch your focus to finding holiday accommodation. Whilst finding available accommodation in popular tourist areas can prove tricky, some detailed research should turn up some intriguing options. Browse through your local free ads to find holiday rental accommodation to meet your needs.

London, Gatwick

yet again Airports are closed their doors due to a large mass of snow which has shrouded the run ways. Six inches of snow has terminated nearly 600 flights and has left thousands of passengers stranded with nowhere to go or stay.

It’s not only Gatwick has had to close Airports located all over the country are experiencing problems; Heathrow England’s largest Airport is open but do expect delays also Edinburgh airport Scotland has been close because a heavy amount of snow has fallen in that area.

Airlines officials have declared the airport closed for safety reasons, the aviation industry hasn’t had much luck recently, given reason to the airlines are avoiding any reasons to have a potential accident.

Passengers have been warned and have been advised to head back home, until over wise stated.

The Airlines have faced a hard blow over the last couple of year especially due to the world wide recession, Horrendous weather and Staff strike, I’m afraid to say that the future of many airlines looks dim especially if problems like this keep occurring.

Panic is in the air because many people are planning to travel abroad to see their families for Christmas.

People all over England hope for a white Christmas but the reality is there not worth the hassle the bring with them.

i wouldn’t be best pleased if i couldn’t go on my yearly Christmas Antigua Holidaydue to Heavy snow on the run ways!

I cannot see why they don’t use the same Salt n Grit techniques they used on the roads on the run ways the same principals applies?

Plan for the worst case scenario if you have a flight approaching in the next couples of weeks as the snow fall is forecasted to last for a few weeks to come, if your lucky you might get a refund and you could treat yourself to an exotic Sri Lank Holiday or a Dominican Republic Holiday Later on in the year.

Manchester Airport played host to a larger than normal visitor this week when the world’s largest commercial airliner, the Airbus A380, landed at the airport for the first time.

Manchester is the first regional airport in the world to have a daily service provided by the A380. The jet has flown into London Heathrow for around two years now.

Emirates flight EK017 from Dubai was greeted by thousands of people, who turned out to see the massive 517-seat double-decker plane land at the airport.

The Airbus A380 made its initial journey on 27 April 2005 from Toulouse, France, and made its first commercial flight on 25 October 2007 from Singapore to Sydney.

The A380′s upper deck extends along the entire length of the fuselage, and its width is equivalent to that of a wide-body aircraft. This provides 49% more floor space than the next-largest airliner, the Boeing 747-400. Depending on the configuration of the aeroplane, it can provide seating for 525 people in a typical three-class configuration or up to 853 people in an all-economy configuration.

Airbus are to also offer a freighter version of the aircraft, the A380-800F, that when operational will be one of the largest freight aircraft in the world, with a payload capacity exceeded only by the Antonov An-225.

The A380-800 has a design range of 15,200km (8,200 nmi), sufficient to fly non-stop from New York to Hong Kong and has a cruising speed of Mach 0.85 (about 900 km/h or 560 mph at cruising altitude).

Andrew Cornish, managing director of Manchester Airport, said: “This is a really significant day for aviation here in the Northwest and we aim to celebrate it appropriately.”

Manchester Airport has invested more than £10 million in the past 18 months upgrading its facilities to accommodate the plane.

I can understand why people dress up when it comes to going to the airport because they are getting on a plane full of loads of people and there are a lot of people out there that like to look their best for all kinds of situations including ones like this. However is it really necessary to put on all of that silver jewellery when it comes to the airport and even more importantly, would it be better off and waiting until you arrive n holiday.

Security

before you leave with all of your best jewellery on make sure you know about security, it is a lot tighter in some place rather than others, the US for example are very tight on all of their security. They will often ask people to take off all of that turquoise jewellery because it can interfere with the systems in place and will make the detector go off. something worth knowing is that when you land you will most likely have to do the same as well so know this well.

Being Comfortable

being comfortable on a flight, especially a long one is very important indeed and are you actually going to be comfortable in all of your best clothes and items, I seriously doubt it. Take the silver brooches off and make sure you can rest properly. there is no way you are going to get nice and comfy if you are in your best jewellery. Who sleeps in jewellery after all?

one a final note you always need to be aware of the people around you. if you are wearing the most expensive jewellery that you own then you are a target for thieves so make sure that you never parade around too publicly with things such as thi.

of course the decision on something like this is yours to make just make sure you do what is right.

The number of passengers using BAA airports fell dramatically throughout late June and early July, with the British Airway strikes in June apparantly causing the drop in numbers. According to BAA, passenger numbers dropped by 1.7% in its airports over the last month (compared to the same period last year).

Although British Airways is denying that the strikes are entirely to blame, BAA have stated that if it wasn’t for the strike they’d have expected numbers to at least match last years.

British Airways staff (mainly cabin crew) were on strike for 9 days in June, and have so far taken 22 days off on strike since the new year started. BA claimed the amount of people it carried last month was down 11% due to the strikes, although it still had over 2.5 million customers.

BAA currently runs and operates six major UK airports, as it sold Gatwick in 2009 for a reported £1.5bn. BAA now operates Stansted, Heathrow, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Southampton and Aberdeen airports.

It’s really tough to tell how much the BA strikes have affected the BAA passenger numbers. Glasgow airport, who do see BA flights, saw a 7% decline in passengers from last year, although Stansted airport, which doesn’t have any BA flights, saw a 5.2% reduction from last year.

Perhaps BAA needs to do a better job with its airports, rather than simply blaming British Airways for their own internal strikes. Take Manchester Airport for example, they focus heavily on customer service, staff happiness and a high level of retail and functional facilities. They have seen a steady increase in business, passengers and critical acclaim over the last couple of year, and it’s almost certainly not a coincidence that their airport lounges & airport hotels are very highly thought of and rated, as are the staff and the Manchester Airport parking facilities are some of the best in the country.

London is serviced by 5 major airports, simply because of the huge number of tourists that visit the capital each year. Each of these airports offers good links to the city centre; a fact that makes them popular destinations for visitors and commuters alike.

Heathrow Airport – The majority of visitors to the UK fly into one of Heathrow’s 5 terminals. The airport accommodates 90 individual airlines that fly in from over 170 major airports worldwide; making it is busiest for international travelers. Traveling into the city from Heathrow is quick and simple with the London Underground being on site. The journey is just short of 22km, it takes approximately 50 minutes and costs around $6.

Gatwick Airport – Gatwick is located slightly further from the centre of London (45km) however the transport network into the city is very good. If traveling by bus the journey can take up to 90 minutes, depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. Alternatively Gatwick trains run regularly into London Victoria. Gatwick is smaller than Heathrow and is better known for its charter and discount flights.

Stansted Airport – Although not as big as the major airports Stansted caters for a range of budget airlines, a fact that makes it a popular choice for tourists. The airport is located nearly 50km NE of London’s centre but the variety of transport links make commuting easy. Terravision, Stansted Bus and easyBus are reliable methods of travel into London with Marble Arch, Baker Street and Victoria Station being popular destinations.

Luton Airport – Luton Airport is actually located in the county of Bedfordshire, approximately 55km north of London’s centre. Being a small, single runway airport it is commonly used by commuters traveling to destinations in Europe and for visitors arriving on budget airlines. There are bus services that run into London 24 hours per day, the most popular of which are easyBus and Green Line.

London City Airport – Although this small inner-city airport only offers a single runway it is highly popular with business travelers destined for the financial district of London. Located close to Canary Wharf the London City Airport is just 11km from the city centre and is well connected via the Docklands Light Railway and a plethora of bus services. It is worth mentioning that planes landing here must be able to perform short take-offs and equally short landings.

International airports outside London include Birmingham and Manchester, both of which offer an alternative to the airports of London. Birmingham airport is central to the UK while Manchester is located in the north. Both have outstanding transport links to all the major cities of the UK, including of course London.

With a long history as a major hub of air travel, Gatwick Airport has served as a gateway between London and the rest of the world for millions of people. However even with all the things Gatwick is famous for, there are just as many elements of its history that are not quite as evident, and can be a joy for the inquisitive historian to discover.

#1 – Architectural Advances

In 1936, Gatwick unveiled the world’s first circular airport terminal, dubbed the Beehive. Though they are commonplace these days, it was an extraordinary achievement for the time. A direct rail link was also installed for the first time anywhere, which meant that passengers could board their aircraft directly rather than having to travel across the runway by bus or on foot.

#2 – The Blitz

During the second World War, all available resources had to be turned toward keeping Britain safe from the German Luftwaffe. Gatwick participated when it was requisitioned by the RAF as a combat airfield, and provided service to a number of important operations necessary to keeping England’s skies clear of bombers.

#3 – Royal Attentions

Gatwick has been graced on two separate occasions with a Royal presence at important opening ceremonies. Queen Elizabeth II first attended to re-open the airport after it underwent a major redevelopment in 1956, and she returned thirty years later with her husband Prince Phillip to preside over the opening of the new North Terminal.

#4 – A Former Racecourse

Did you know that Gatwick used to be a racecourse? Purchased from private hands in 1890, the land was turned into a modern racing facility that even included its own railway station. It was temporarily home to the Grand National, which is one of the world’s most famous races. It was only when the Beehive opened that it finally lost its racing ties, as up until then Gatwick’s train station was called the Gatwick Racecourse Station.

#5 – Private Fliers

Gatwick was not originally a public airport for major travel. In the 20′s and 30′s, for example, it was a private flying club controlled by Ronald Waters. The flying club that used it, which was the Surrey Aero Club, became so popular though, and brought so much attention to the airport, that it was soon granted a commercial flying license, which meant that members of the public could fly in and out of it.

Propatube.com – Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel

If you’ve ever taken your own car to a busy British airport you will know how busy they are and why it’s important to pre-book your car parking space. If you don’t pre-book and just turn up at the airport you will be surprised at the parking charges and can find that there are no spaces available.

Luckily, its very easy to go online and pre-book your parking space to save some money. You will find that online prices are a fraction of what your parking would cost otherwise. But you can make even greater savings and make your trip a whole lot more enjoyable at the same time.

If you have an early morning flight then a local airport hotel is probably the best way to make certain you are at your airport terminal on time. An airport hotel room can be a great way to start your short break that little bit sooner. Many of the top name airport hotels provide some exceptional services. They usually provide top quality restaurants, excellent bars, room service and some have gymnasia and swimming pools.

Rather than rushing to the airport in the early hours of the morning, spending the night before in a comfortable, local hotel means boarding your flight already relaxed and ready to make the most of your short break.

If that isn’t enough of an incentive to make you want to take a hotel room for the night before your flight then what about a hotel room that includes airport parking? Many popular airport hotels are now offering some incredibly attractive deals that include a convenient airport parking space for the period of your holiday.

Airport hotels with parking provide a convenient way to save money and headaches. They will typically include a parking space that is yours for 8 days or 15 days even though you have only taken a hotel room for just one night.

Airport hotels providing inclusive airport parking are an example of how airport hotels are doing what they can to accommodate the desires of today’s demanding travelers.

These days I’m lucky as I don’t often have to travel on business. On a recent business trip to the states I think I made about every newbie travel mistake possible.

Things didn’t start well as, when I arrived at Gatwick there were no more nearby airport parking spaces in the car parks close to my airport terminal. I ended up taking a space in a car park miles away and had to pay top dollar for the privelige.

This delayed my getting to the checkin desk and I was already a bit late. This didn’t go down well at the check in desk where they told me that I should have arrived an hour earlier. They also told me that I could have checked in online and printed my boarding pass myself before leaving home. Well you live and learn I suppose.

The early start had meant leaving home without eating breakfast so I thought I’d get a bite from one of the many airport restaurants. I couldn’t believe what they were charging for a full English breakfast and if I wasn’t travelling on expenses I wouldn’t have been too happy at paying the extortionate airport prices.

I arrived in Atlanta and immediately headed for one of the car hire providers. It turned out that there were a whole load of conferences in town and most of their more comfortable models had already been hired out. I ended up having to accept a Dodge pickup for the duration of my two day visit. If I’d booked in advance I’d have saved my employers some money and probably got the car that I wanted.

When I returned to Atlanta airport for my homeward journey I omitted to remove my keys from my pocket and had chosen a different belt which has a heavy metal buckle. This resulted in my undergoing no less than three body scans before I successfully passed through the security check.

It wasn’t until I’d boarded the aircraft that I realised that I had lost my PDA, either lost or stolen in the airport. Or it may have been stolen from my pocket. It wasn’t until I got home that I found out that my travel insurance policy didn’t provide cover to lost or stolen PDAs or other electronic gadgets. I wished that I had checked before leaving and taken out a gadget insurance policy.

It’s pretty obvious that I am a little out of practice when it comes to air travel these days. I think I should simply stay put here in the UK.
